April Fools!

Every Most Mondays, I send out a #booksaroundtheroom via Twitter, so my students can share what they’re reading with the world. “It’s Monday! What are you Reading?” is a meme co-hosted by Jen and Kellee at Teach Mentor Texts. Just like #booksaroundtheroom, it is a way to share books you’ve been reading, reviewing, and loving during the last week. I read a lot, both on my own and with my two kids, Corbchops (4.78) and The Iza (2.71). I’m excited to hear what you’ve been reading.

Spring #bookaday has begun! It’s fun to read everyone’s IMWAYR posts over the last few weeks as different teachers and librarians have their Spring Breaks at different times. The amount of reading will surely fluctuate significantly as our daily duties shift.

In my classroom, we finished up our student-led conferences this week. I love these so much. I also spent a day at the Young Authors conference with 50 elementary writers, Royce Buckingham, and a few other local authors and illustrators.

We voted for our state book awards. We gave the Sasquatch Award to Cosmic, by Frank Cottrell Boyce, and the Young Readers Choice Award to The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, by Tom Angleberger. We’ll see soon who actually wins!

Here’s what I’ve enjoyed during the last week:

Middle Grade:

I finished three middle grade novels last week.

• Crossing the Wire, by Will Hobbs. This was a reread for my Guys Read book club. Tons to talk about with this book!
• One Came Home, by Amy Timberlake. I loved the voice and the imagery in this novel. I think of this as probably 6th grade and up, except for some select 5th graders. What do you think?
• Cosmic, by Frank Cottrell Boyce. My class chose this as a read aloud from the award nominees. It was fun–lots of accents to try. Our class voting definitely got a bump from my reading it aloud.

Graphic Novels:

I finished three graphic novels last week. I love graphic novels!

• Odd Duck, by Cecil Castelucci and Sara Varon. A pleasant all-ages tale.
• Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong, by Prudence Shen and Faith Erin Hicks. I love Faith’s style, and this was a fun high school story.
• Stickman Odyssey, Book 1: An Epic Doodle, by Christopher Ford. This was an interesting and sometimes humorous take on The Odyssey, but I definitely wasn’t blown away. I picked it up because Book 2 is a CBC Children’s Choice nominee. I’ll read Book 2 soon.

Picture Books:

I read 6 picture books last week. My favorite three were:

• Terrific, by Jon Agee. Good book for examining sarcasm and sincerity.
• The Foot Book, by Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss makes it look easy. But I didn’t see my “Big feet, wide feet, different sized feet” anywhere.
• Something to Prove: The Great Satchel Paige vs. Rookie Joe Dimaggio, by Robert Skead and Floyd Cooper. An informative, though not particularly breathtaking baseball book.
