Oh, me? OK.
My name is Adam Shaffer.
I have taught for 11 years. My first five were in fourth grade. Then I taught one year of fifth, before moving back to fourth. For the last two years, I have taught fifth grade. All of my teaching has been in the same small district in Northwest Washington State. Only in the last few years have I felt like I have some confidence and focus in my teaching. My first several years were a struggle with management, planning, and other things. I’m glad I stuck with it, though, because I am very happy now.
Part of this transformation had to do with social media. I got on Twitter and started following children’s authors. Then I started following other teachers and librarians who were following children’s authors. Then #nerdybookclub started, and I have been in Heaven ever since. Suddenly, I was “surrounded” by people who shared my interests and passions, valued my opinions, and provided a wealth of knowledge and experience. Twitter and Goodreads became the professional learning community I never had.
For the last eight years, I’ve run a Guys Read book club for fourth and fifth graders. It is my favorite thing to do. We have a blog.
I have two kids, Corbchops (4.5) and The Iza (2.5). We read a lot. Corbchops is just starting to be able to wound out words on his own. It is pretty exciting.
I started this blog because I felt like I was doing too many fun things in my classroom (and life!)…not to share. I hope you find some ideas among my posts, and share some of your own in the comments.
I’ve written two posts on the #nerdybookclub blog:
